Where do I go from here?

by Brian
(Virginia)

I recently finished an online (about 4 months) pharmacy tech class and took and passed the PTCB exam on my first try. I'm really interested in this type job but do not really know how to get an entry level position. Around here it might take awhile for a vacancy. Any advice on best way to start?

Pharmacy Tech

Congratulation on your latest achievement. I'm also a Pharmacy Technician myself. I did a college program for about a year, did training in two different pharmacies. I don't want to discourage you. Instead, but, I lived in a small town where there are like about 25 pharmacies and two hospitals. I have applied in every pharmacy and hospital and nobody has even giving a chance for an interview. I wanna think there is something wrong with my resume or the economy is so bad that no pharmacy in my town is hiring except for hospital and as you may know is order to work in hospital sometimes they required to have at least a year experience in retail. go figure. so, I wish you good luck and hopefully you get hired soon.

Extern?

Have you tried offering to be an extern? Free work could turn into a job. It is absolutely a foot in the door.

I have also recently passed my PTCB. I am doing my clinicals now. I applied for several jobs online and have gotten one. It seemed like when I first started there were no jobs out there. Now there are quite a few. Apply to all the pharmacy's and grocery stores that have pharmacy's on-line. It only took me a week to find something!
Good Luck!

Keep looking and don't give up

I wish I had some answers but I'm also looking for jobs right now. I passed the exam at the end of January, completely overhauled my resume and have been applying to places that have openings. Unfortunately, most locations want someone with anywhere from 6 months to 2 years of experience. The one job I've encountered that doesn't require prior experience is a graveyard shift as a picker/packer :/ All I can do is encourage you to check job postings daily and make sure his resume fits the job he's applying for. I've decided that even if I have to start out in retail making less than I was hoping for, it's the only way I'm going to get experience so I can move on to something I'm truly interested in. Stay focused on what you want and find a path there!

Similar situation

I went to school back in 2005 for pharmacy tech, graduated March 2006 and took and passed the PTCB on my first try in July 2006. I applied everywhere in the Hampton Roads area of VA and out of countless applications I went on two interviews.... I didn't accept either job, one because the starting pay they offered was $7.25hr. and at the time I made almost $9 at the craft store (where is the logic in that?) the other job offered more money $8.15 hr. but needed me to be available between 6am-6pm and with a deployed husband and kids I wasn't able to promise that.
Now in 2011, I will start my first Pharm Tech job today!!! I am so happy to FINALLY be working in a field I went to school for and enjoyed (I had to do an 80 hour externship to graduate) So don't give up, but it might take a long time to find the right fit. I did find out that none of the area hospitals will hire without at least 2 years retail experience, and that includes all of the military clinics and hospitals.

Job Opportunities

When looking for a position as a Pharmacy Tech, first ask yourself a few questions: 1) What is the minimum pay rate I require? Am I willing to commute 20 miles one way? 25 miles? 50 miles? What shift or hours am I willing to work? Am I willing to PRN or work part time? What type work environment is my 1st choice? 2nd choice? 3rd? Next, check all the possible employers that would be looking for a CphT. Don't forget the not so obvious, for example: the state penal system (check out websites for CCA and Corizon), PBMs/insurance companies, mail order pharmacies and closed door pharmacies (those that service nursing homes, home health and hospice). Also, check the Veterans' Administration for job openings at any VA facilities near where you live. Many of the larger metropolitan areas also have nuclear pharmacies, compounding pharmacies and pharmacies that provide pre-packaged parenterals to area hospitals and clinics (check out Cardinal Health). Check out Indeed.com or simplyhired.com daily using the keyword "pharmacy". Local pharmacies and sometimes the chains do not usually advertise positions, so you will have to go to each of these in person. BE PERSISTENT! You will find something sooner than you think.
